A fire broke through the monkey’s house on the New Year’s Eve at the German Zoo, killing about 30 animals inside. Among the animals that died in the Krefeld Zoo, near the Dutch border were chimpanzees, orangutans, gorillas, bats and birds. Bally and Limbo, two chimpanzees survived, said the zoo.

Depicting the fire as an “incomprehensible tragedy”, it said the reason was not known. Nearby supporter WDR said agents were investigating the probability it had been begun by a celebratory firecracker.
